Digital Colour

I have had a go at adding some really quick digital colour to my drawing. I kept with more natural colours, and left the hair white as I thought it made a nice contrast. Although I felt the colouring looked a bit too strong, so I decided to alter the opacity to make it a bit paler and allow the pencil to shine through more, keeping more of a hand drawn feeling...

I then had a go at adding some really simple colour to the background - I chose pink as I wanted to keep a feminine feel to it, but also because pink is a popular colour choice for underwear.

Although this is still obviously too simple, I think if I drew some more elements and added them in, and put some things in the hands it would look better. I also had a quick go at adding a lace texture to the background, to link in with the underwear concept, although could only find some small images on the web... if I want to do that i'll probably have to scan in some lace myself to get my own texture.

Development and Ideas

I first started developing my work by doing lots of photocopies of my collages and working into them... nothing really too exciting, just playing around with compositions and quick drawings on top of them, like this -

From here I had a go at re-drawing them. I wasn't too sure with how to add the colour in, so I tried just simply using coloured pencils then shading over the top. I stuck with more natural colours, and had a go at keeping some bits just black and white, although I felt this looked a bit boring.

I then went back to my sketchbook and did a few colour experiments, just to try out a few different techniques. I had a go at just using bright coloured pencils, and felt tips with pencil over the top. Although I like the vibrancy and effect of these I felt it wasn't quite right for the brand, and that something more polished would reflect them better.

So from here I have gone back to just sketching out one of the collages in pencil, and Im going to have a go at digitally colouring it, to get that more 'polished' feel. I think my main aim is to create something interesting and unique, but still looking elegant, which hopefully this will be nearer to once it is coloured!

Triumph Collages

I decided to do a couple of briefs for my Major Project, and one of them is for Triumph by YCN. I thought it would be nice to do Triumph as I could do something a bit different, as recently all my work and commissions has been animal related.

Anyway, the brief is to promote the company's bra fitting service as 70% of women wear the wrong size bra. I thought it would be nice to have people literally not fitting together, as properly fitting underwear is key to your clothes looking right and you feeling good.

I decided to start by doing some quick collages with images from fashion magazines, as I felt using fashion photos for references would give the advertising more of a younger, current feel. Although the target audience is 'style seekers aged 25-50' from asking around I found that most people view the brand as one for an older audience, more 35-60; therefore I felt it was important to bring in a younger age group.

I also found working with collage quite useful, in that its easy to play around and find the best composition, plus I think the different sized body parts from different photos work well with the concept. (The collages went kinda crazy and streaky when I scanned them in)
